CUSTOM TRUSSES: FROM WORKSHOP TO BUILDING SITE

Add a Spectacular Feature to Your Next Project

Log trusses are no longer just a structural feature of a building. They have become an important design element too. Whether your clients are looking for a rustic log home, industrial elegance or timber sophistication, a custom truss will provide unique character to both interior and exterior spaces.

Heartwood Mills specializes in designing and crafting custom log trusses for project of all kinds. We collaborate with architects and builders to bring their ideas to life. But, if you need inspiration, our expert craftsmen will work with you and your client to design a custom truss that will transform a home or commercial building from ordinary to spectacular.

Trusses can be crafted from Northern White Cedar, White Spruce, Red Cedar, and Douglas Fir. The style of your design and look you’re trying to achieve will drive the choice of rough sawn or smooth timber or logs. You can also customize the look of your truss by selecting decorative truss connectors or choosing to keep the connections hidden so that  the focus remains on the beauty of the wood and the design. No matter how massive the truss you’re envisioning, Heartwood Mills is better equipped than most to accommodate your design. We have the equipment and expertise to cut structural beams up to 30’ in length.

Getting Started with a Custom Truss

It all starts with a conversation with one of our truss experts. If you already have a design, we’ll review it with our craftsmen, make any suggestions or recommendations, and then provide an estimate for the work.

If you don’t have a design, we’ll have a much longer conversation about what you’re building and the style you’re trying to achieve. Our design team will work with our craftsmen to offer design options that you can present to your client. Once a design is agreed upon, we will provide an estimate for the custom truss work.

A signed agreement means the heavy lift can begin on crafting a custom truss. After the logs that have been selected for the custom truss have been inspected to make sure they will meet BOCA building codes, they are brought into the Heartwood Mills workshop for scribing and assembly by our experienced craftsmen. They’ll typically work 40-50 hours on a single custom truss to make sure it meets our exacting standards.
